Flat Dies and Feedblocks
For Sheet and Cast Film

Wayne Yellow Jacket® Flexible Lip Flat Dies from 4" wide up to 156"
wide for Sheet and Cast Film have been developed for precision extrusion
of sheet and cast film without the typical problems one encounters when
using light duty lab and production dies and feedblocks. Wayne Yellow
Jacket® Flexible Lip Flat Dies have some unique features that make
them easier to use:
-
Heavy Duty design means that Wayne Yellow Jacket® dies are made
from hardened steel with ground surfaces as opposed to other lab grade
or production grade dies that are made from soft steels like 1018. Hardened
steel stands up better against abrasion from the polymer and has higher
tensile strength, which means that the lips and flow surfaces are stronger
and do not yield as easily to the melt pressure. This structural stability
in the die allows the extrusion process to be more stable, producing a
precision sheet or film. The dies are constructed with two massive upper
and lower halves which are much thicker than typical laboratory dies. This
adds to strength while enhancing thermal stability for an even heat distribution
and reliable temperature profile which is critical to successful extrusion.
Chrome plating protects the die from corrosion and makes the die easier
to clean.
-
Push - Pull design means that the flexible lips are adjustable in
both directions, not just one. Typical dies offered for laboratory and
production are push only types, which rely on the melt pressure to push
the lips to the limit of the bolt adjustment. Wayne flat dies are much
more stable, since they are adjustable in both directions for accurate
setup and operation. This stability in the lips makes it easier to setup
the die for a flat, precision traverse sheet profile and minimizes changes
in the sheet profile due to fluctuations in melt pressure.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
-
Deckling
-
Special steels and special plating
-
Retrofit packages including special adapters to fit your existing extruders
-
Heat control panels for existing extruders without enough heat zones or
amp capacity
-
Die carts for easy handling and rigid support during setup, cleaning and
operation
SLOT DIES
Wayne Yellow Jacket Slot Dies are used in testing applications to produce
flat tape or strip. They range in size from 1 inch wide to 4 inches wide.
They feature an adjustable rigid lip that is typically adjustable from
0 to .125 inch for making different thickness flat tape or strip. The slot
dies are ideal for use with extruders 1 inch and under.
FEEDBLOCKS
Wayne Yellow Jacket® Feedblocks are designed to produce co-extruded
multi-layer structure sheet and cast film by combining melt flows from
two or more extruders. Structures from 2 layer up to 7 layer are easily
accommodated in a variety of structures including A-B, A-B-C, A-B-A, A-B-C-B-A,
A-B-C-D-C-B-A , and virtually any other combination required. Wayne Yellow
Jacket® Feedblocks have some unique features that make them easy to
work with:
-
Easy split layer and viscosity adjustment is achieved by the easily
accessible flow compensators. For example, in an A-B-A structure, the
A melt flow is split into two layers. The top A layer might be a different
thickness than the bottom A layer. While other feedblocks require you to
break down the feedblock, clean it, file the fixed flow compensation tooling,
and re-assemble, the Wayne system allows for easy adjustment with a special
tool, without breaking down the feedblock. Another problem with other feedblocks
occurs when you file too much off of the fixed compensation tooling. Then
you are forced to replace the tooling. The Wayne system can easily be adjusted
back to the starting point by a simple outside adjustment!

-
Square output provides a precision distribution of layers as opposed
to oval or round output feedblocks which are more complicated to work with.
-
Quick-change tooling allows changeovers from one structure to another
in minutes. Only one side of the feedblock is required to be removed for
tooling changes! Some other feedblocks are of fixed design or are difficult
to change structures. The Wayne feedblock offers flexibility and ease of
setup and operation.
-
Cartridge heaters which traverse the block provide even heating and fast
start-ups as opposed to mica or cast heaters on other feedblocks which
simply go around the outside and take longer to heat the inside of the
block where the plastic flows.
